Why We Built a Membership Model

Every so often, someone asks us a fair question: if Collably really exists to help young Tanzanians, why isn't it free?

It deserves a straight answer, not a diplomatic one. So here it is.

We've watched free things disappear

You've probably seen this story before. A youth program launches with energy and funding. It's free, it's everywhere, people build their plans around it. Then, quietly, it fades: the grant cycle ends, the donor's priorities shift, the pilot phase closes. The website stays up for a while like a building nobody works in anymore. The young people who relied on it go back to figuring things out alone.

Nobody in that story did anything wrong. Free programs die of dependence: when your entire existence hangs on someone else renewing their generosity, your future is decided in rooms you're not in.

We refused to build Collably on that foundation. Our mission is to grow builders over years, from secondary school through college and beyond. You cannot make a promise that long while funding it in one-year grant cycles. So we made a decision early: the community itself would carry a real share of its own weight.

That's what the membership fee is. Not a price tag on opportunity, but the community's way of making sure the lights stay on, this year and in ten years.

What the fee actually pays for

Your annual fee goes into the things you can see and touch: the trainings and the instructors who run them, the events, the mentorship programs, your verified digital ID and the physical card if you request one, and the everyday cost of keeping the platform itself running.

In return, membership gets you the full experience: discounted or free access to trainings, events, and services (usually half price, sometimes free entirely), priority access when cohorts and events fill up, and a verified identity with a standing record of what you've done across the platform, a record that works for you when opportunities show up.

And because members fund the foundation, we can keep most events free and open to everyone, member or not. That's deliberate too: the doors into this community should be free, even if the full house isn't.

There's a second reason, and it's about you

Sustainability is the practical reason. But there's a quieter reason we believe in membership, and we learned it from our own story.

When our first attempt failed, one pattern stood out: the people who lost nothing by leaving, left. Free things are easy to join and just as easy to abandon, and building, the thing this whole community exists for, is exactly the kind of long, unglamorous work that easy-to-abandon commitments never survive.

A modest fee changes your posture. You stop being a visitor and become a stakeholder. You show up differently for something you've invested in, and everyone else in the room has made the same quiet declaration: I'm not here to browse. A community of people who've all chosen to commit is worth more to every one of its members, and that's not something money buys. It's something the act of paying signals.

The part we're not comfortable with

Now the honest section, because our posts always have one.

We know the fee is a real barrier for some students. Not an inconvenience, a barrier. There are young people who fit this community perfectly, who need it most, and for whom even a modest annual fee is genuinely out of reach. Pretending otherwise would be dishonest.

We're working on ways to make exceptions for such cases, and as the community grows, so will our room to widen the door. What we won't do is quietly pretend the platform runs on goodwill, promise everything free, and join the graveyard of programs that did. Between a free promise that dies and an honest fee that lasts, we chose the one that will still be here for your younger siblings.

In the meantime: most of our events are free, our guides are free, and there is a lot you can learn and gain here before spending a shilling. Start there if you need to. The community is bigger than the fee.

Becoming a member

If you're ready, the process is simple: sign up, choose membership, submit your payment proof, and we verify it within a day or two. Your digital ID follows, and everything on the platform opens up at member terms.

We built the membership model because we intend to keep our promise for a very long time. If that's the kind of community you want to build in, we'd be glad to have you as a stakeholder in it.
