How Collably Works

If you've read the story of why we started Collably, you already know what we believe: the best time to try, fail, and try again is before graduation. This post is about how we actually make that happen.

The short answer: not one thing at a time.

Everything happens in parallel

Most programs work in stages. First you learn, then you graduate from the program, then someday you apply what you learned. We don't believe in that sequence, because building doesn't work that way either.

At Collably, everything runs at the same time. You acquire a practical skill while you're forming a team. You're building a project while you're still deepening that skill. You're preparing yourself, your mindset, your habits, your discipline, while you're already in the middle of using them. Skills, projects, teams, and preparation all grow together, each one feeding the others.

This is deliberate. A skill you're not using goes stale. A project without skills goes nowhere. A team without a project has nothing to hold it together. The fastest way to grow all of them is to grow them at once.

So what does that look like in practice? It looks like a community built from a few connected pieces, each one existing for a reason.

Trainings: where skills are built

It starts with skills, because in our first attempt we learned the hard way that you cannot build on skills people don't actually have.

We host trainings from time to time, and they come in different shapes. Some are technical: data science, AI engineering, web development, cybersecurity. Some are non-technical: business planning, marketing, design, public speaking, financial literacy. Some are open to everyone. Some are for members only. Some are free, and some are paid, with members always paying less, often half, sometimes nothing.

Our most serious trainings run as cohorts: small groups, real instructors, real deadlines, and real feedback. We keep cohorts small enough that the instructor knows every student by name, because it's very easy to quietly fall behind in a recorded video course, and very hard to hide in a room of twenty people who know you.

But make no mistake: a training here is never the destination. Every skill you pick up is meant to be used, and used soon.

Teams and projects: where everything points

This is the heart of Collably, the part that started it all.

You bring a skill, someone else brings a different one. A coder meets a designer meets someone who can sell. Teams form, pick a real problem, and start building. And when we say building, we mean anything: a startup, a small business done right, a tech product, even another organization like this one, solving problems we don't solve. If it creates real value for real people, it counts.

Some projects will die quickly. Some will limp. Every now and then, one will stick. We expect that, we planned for it, and it's exactly why we want you experimenting now, while you're still in school so that failed project costs you almost nothing.

Either way, nobody leaves empty-handed. Every project adds to your experience, your portfolio, and your network, the three things no one can take away from you.

Guides, events, and services: help at the right moment

Building raises questions that classes never answer. How do you register a company? How do you know if your idea is worth pursuing? How do you plan money you don't have yet? How do you get funding, etc.

For the questions with clear answers, we write short, step-by-step guides anyone can follow. For the things better experienced live, we host events: workshops, info sessions, networking mixers, and sessions where you meet mentors and potential teammates. Most are free, and they're often where you meet the people you'll later build with.

And for the moments that need real, personal attention, we offer services: mentorship pairings, business plan reviews, idea validation sessions, and honest feedback on whatever you're building. Mentorship deserves a special mention here. Advice is everywhere, but a mentor is someone who stays involved long enough to see whether the advice worked. The real value of mentorship shows up in the fifth conversation, not the first.

And yes, some of our guides and services also cover CVs, interviews, job applications, HESLB loan applications, and college or university applications. That's not a contradiction. Collably exists to help you progress, not just as a builder or entrepreneur, but throughout your academic and professional journey. Sometimes that means helping you launch a startup. Other times it means helping you secure funding for your education, apply for the next stage of your studies, or land your first job. The experience and portfolio you build here make you stronger wherever you're headed, and we'd rather you walk into any room, investor's, admissions officer's, or employer's, with real work and real confidence to show.

Partners: the people who make it possible

We are a small team, and we know we can't teach everything ourselves. That's where partners come in.

If you're an expert in your field, a developer, a designer, an accountant, a marketer, an entrepreneur who's been through it, you can join Collably as a partner and help train the next generation of builders. Instructors for our trainings, mentors for our members, organizers for our events: most are professionals who decided their experience should outlive their job title. Membership: what ties it together

Finally, membership. Collably is open to everyone, but members get the full experience: discounted or free access to trainings, events, and services, priority when things fill up, and a verified digital ID that carries your record across the platform.

Membership is paid, and that's deliberate too. We've written a whole post about why, but the short version is this: we'd rather charge a modest annual fee and still be here in ten years than be free and quietly disappear when donor money runs out.

The whole picture

So that's how Collably works. You come in through whichever door is nearest, a free event, a guide, a training. You pick up skills. You meet people. You join or form a team. You start building, while the risks are low and the stakes are forgiving. And you keep learning the whole way through, because none of this happens in stages. It all happens together.
